Amblyopia can be defined as decreased vision in one or both eyes. Eye laziness that occurs in childhood can be seen in almost one in every 20 children and can turn into a lifelong problem if left untreated. Early diagnosis is of great importance in the lazy eye, which is especially common in children with winking.
Eye laziness can be diagnosed only during clinical eye examination, since they cannot express their complaints in children. Amblyopia can also be found inherited in the family. For this reason, it is recommended that children with lazy eye and parents have their eyes examined by a physician before it is late. It is very important not to be between the ages of 7-10 to be treated especially in children.
When is the Best Age to Diagnose Amblyopia?
As mentioned earlier, the earlier the diagnosis and treatment of lazy eye, the better results are obtained. Eye laziness should be diagnosed from birth to adolescence and the underlying cause should be treated. For this, children should have an eye examination at least once in 6 months at a young age. In children, when they are 2-3 years old, if there is a need for glasses, it should be determined and diagnosis of lazy eye.
Symptoms of Amblyopia;
- Frequent blinking in children
- Squinting or rubbing
- Difficulty in jobs requiring hand and eye coordination
- Keeping one eye closed
- Distraction or absent-mindedness
- Reading the distant articles, complaining of strain and headache related to this
- To take a very close look during reading or writing or to follow the lines by finger
When such symptoms are seen, they should be examined by the ophthalmologist without delay.
There are 3 different ways lazy eye can be seen;
Laziness, called cataract, is one of the early developing lazy formations. Congenital cataracts should be treated at the ideal time.
If one of the eyes sees more blurred than the other due to the high refractive error, this eye may be lazy by completing vision development. It is a form of lazy eye that is difficult to diagnose since no problems are observed in the eyes.
The last way lazy eye is seen is strabismus. The strabismus becomes laziness due to the slippage in the eye.
Treatment of Amblyopia
Treatment of lazy eye is based on its strengthening by using the weak eye. First of all the strong eye can be closed with a special bandage. If there is strabismus, closure treatment can be applied before and after surgical intervention. In the lazy eye treatment, it is very important to identify the underlying problem and apply the necessary treatment.
